Family Tents

three season tents

No offence but I'd have to have Kangaroos loose in the top paddock to consider a family camping trip! For me, hiking and camping is about getting away from it all – and that includes my family. That said I know some people think it's a ripper way of getting the family away for a break and buying a family tent can mean cheap holidays for years to come!

Family tents are of course large and spacious – how ever much you love your ankle biters you'll want some privacy if you're camping out for a few days. Because of their size, family tents tend to be heavier and less portable. If you're going on a hike think carefully about the terrain as lugging one of these up a mountain can be a challenge and London to a brick you'll be aching most of the trip. There are lighter versions of family tents but these can mean a compromise and how rugged they are and how much they'll protect you from the elements.

Family tents often come with one very large room or with a removable room divider. The divider lets you separate the tent into smaller, private rooms – very practical for storing wet gear as well. Most of the regular tent features are included in family tents - such as vestibules, windows, multiple doors, rainflys and vents, etc. Family tents are most often constructed with strong and sturdy aluminum or fiberglass poles which keep the structure sturdy and stable in windy weather. That said don't expect a family tent to stand up to really harsh conditions and don't risk coming a gutser when your family are with you.

There are various types of family tents available and you'll find that they generally hold between four and 10 people depending on the size. Larger family tents usually have room separators installed in them. Most family tents are three season tents but there are some for season tents available for adventurous families who like to camp all year round.

A family tent can make a great base camp to store all your outdoor gear and other essentials such as portable stereos and coolers. Again, this isn't my idea of an adventure and I'd rather pack my bivy up and head off for the hills to drink with the flies!

Family tents are available in a wide range of sizes, styles, shapes and designs. If you're going to take up family camping breaks think about the other gear you'll need such as sleeping bags and equipment for cooking and eating. Always plan for the conditions and areas you plan to visit and don't take chances when you're starting out. Larger family tents can also be quite complicated to set up so have a practise before you go out on a real trip. You don't want the stress of an earbashing from the family as they watch you fumbling with tent poles to set up their shelter for the night!
